Study guide for chapter 5 and 6 test

Study guide: 8th grade chapters 5 and 6 – forces and motion.

Understand the following formulas and be able to use them given a set of data
(they will not be provided) – Non honors are allowed a note card.
F = ma
P=mv
v = (final distance – initial distance) divided by (time final – time initial)
A = (final velocity – initial velocity) divided by (time final – time initial)
d= 1/2at2  or  d=1/2 gt2
average speed = total distance divided by total time
how are speed and velocity different?  How are velocity and acceleration different?  What is negative acceleration?
know the proper units for
velocity, acceleration, speed, distance, mass, momentum, netwon

Know Newton’s Three Laws and be able to explain them or recognize them in different scenarios
Understand the concept of net force.
What is a balanced force, what is an unbalanced force?
What is motion?  How do we know something is moving?
What is a force?
What causes gravity?
Understand the difference between weight and mass.

Understand math break on page 139

What is the rate of acceleration due to gravity on the Earth?  On the moon?  Why different?
Explain why doesn’t a leaf and a marble fall at the same rate?
What is terminal velocity?
What is Inertia?
What is momentum?
What is the difference?
Understand the conservation of momentum.
